Yeah you don't need to be online to get the platinum, I personally keep offline if I'm trying to get the world tendency to pure black or white, pain in the arse when you lose all the hard work you've done to influence WT because of server WT.
That said its great being online reading all the messages left by players, and of course being invaded or invading, watch out for the twats with scraping spears though.
