Logically, a core video gamer would be someone who makes up the foundation of the videogame market. It is these gamers that companies depend on to sell games and make profit. It's the casuals, the people who aren't essential, that make a game sell greatly. Continuing with this train of thought, a hardcore game would be one who is essentially the core of the core. They would tend to buy more games than just a core gamer and play more as a result. They are the steel rod supporting the back bone of the handicapped human body of video games. They are the molten inner core of the planet of video games. They are... that's enough comic book-worthy metaphors and parallelism.

Would you call someone that is well off, buys 10 games a week and plays a combination of different games for many hours but never completes any hardcore?

Or is it about the type of game played or how many are completed?

Personally I would say you have to complete several hundred games of various genres over your lifetime before you can be considered hardcore.

Although I have done this I would not consider myself hardcore, it's just a fun activity I happen to be good at.
