First of all I never said that RT should be the yardstick on which a movie should be measured...but Oscars usually are based on votes which tend to be based on reviews, box office and reception. You were saying how this movie is going to sweep the oscars which is a a little far fetched at the moment.
I saw Inception again today. I wanted to see if I missed anything and how it stacks up on a second viewing... I give credit to Nolan who films movies with such conviction and has the ability to persuade you that what you are watching is absolutely amazing and that the logic is bulletproof... Its only a few days later after you've thought about it for a bit or after you watch it the second time that you realize there are major issues with the movie.
Inception is a perfect example. The movie is being praised as "smart" but think about it...it isn't smart at all. There are no twists which require thinking, no actions which require you to connect any prior events. Sure, it requires for you to pay attention but if that is considered smart these days, then I don't know what to say...
You said in your earlier posts that Nolan brings a level of subtlety to his characters. That is a prepostorous statement which makes me believe you either don't know what that means or didn't watch the movie. In Inception none of the characters other than Leo and his wife are realized at all. Do we know anything about any of them? We know that Juno girl (Ellen Page) is the top student at...drawing mazes? The forger is a former member of...Nsync? None of them are real characters with any development. This fact alone was what made me believe that the whole movie was a dream as everyone other than Leo's character is just a cardboard stand in with lines... but Nolan was too busy at counting exact seconds between the 3 dreams, and making action sequences (which he can't shoot to save his life) to bother exploring that, more interesting, route.
While the internetz will have many different interpretation of the very last scene as that is what internetz does, I believe that scene is just Nolan having some fun with the audience.
"Ooh...its spinning...but kinda akwardly...lets discuss!"
Like I said, I consider it to be a solid entertaining movie. But people need to see it more than once before they start proclaiming "Oscar winner!". Its really not at that level...
As far as TDK, you did not argue that any of the points I brought up are wrong. Just that its "pretty damn great"... I don't know how to respond to that. It is great...but there are major issues with its ending logic. Doesn't that make it not so great?
