Sony are always bringing out nice looking, modern, high quality products that often come with tag lines such as 'the most powerful,' 'the slimmest', 'the fastest' etc.
Also if you look at Sonys ads they ooze with creativity - they had 2 ads rated in the last decades top 20! Even the baby ad and the PS3 are seen as unique, innovative to the general bloke. Even though it's not significantly more powerful - the PS3 has the image as being seen as a beast.
With Blu-Ray, with 3D - Sony are probably seen as the leaders - even though they may or may not be.
It may sound like I'm riding Sony's nuts at the minute lol, but that's how it is. Sony has an exceptional image for a company.
It's the same with Kinect - when it launches MS and Xbox are going to be seen as very creative and innovative - even though similar tech might have been around beforehand etc.
