Anyways, as much as it is the horrible boyfriend's fault, a lot of this is her fault for having horrible taste in men. It's to deter the advances of men, but not in the way you think. The face-veil was the sign of a free woman, long ago. Women who went about uncovered were slaves, and it was death to any slave who went about with a veil. As a "free" woman, that meant you were entailed far more protections from rape and such, because that meant you had the right to go through a proper courtship and get a real husband
