Well yeah, the lovely bones was not a good movie on any level... no explanation for the events was the least of its problems. Good sci fi movies absolutely need to have that "explanation" you are talking about, but it should come at the very end. A trademark of classic science fiction movies is that it keeps a viewer in a state of confusion until the final act. The final act ties it all together and is supposed to blow your mind... All classics do this. Space Oddisey, Terminator, Matrix, Dark City...even B scifi movies like Pandorum and Event Horizon try their best to keep the viewer in suspense until the last 15 minutes. Inception starts off with some truly brilliant ideas, but it explains the rules of engagement in such detail that there is very little unknown or surprises waiting before the final act. The last 30 minutes become nothing more than a ticking clock...rather than events where the whole movie comes together for the viewer. Don't get me wrong, final act is still quite thrilling to watch... But it has more in common with the bank heist of Oceans 11 rather than final act of...lets say...the Matrix. |
One cliche I'm really starting to get annoyed by is the explanation. They try their best to help the audience understand with the "audience character", a character that represents a typical member of the audience, ie; Ellen Paige.
Everything is explained to her with rules... I'm so sick of the rules explanation... it really wasn't a problem in this movie, it is ust cliche.
