Honestly I don't think using macros on a mage job makes you better. It is there for convienence But I prefer a challenge. a challenge of which I always overcame.

FF11 is kind of a slow game so that logic can apply fine without crazy macros which would never work with a game like WoW, and from what I've seen, they are speeding up the combat to close to WoW speed, so.....

FFXI is slow in that you can't get max level in a week or two like WoW but the actually combat and all that is pretty quick and involved (even in long battles).

If you're doing healing or support, you constantly have to be on your toes to keep up with healing, debuffs, buffs, status ailments, and so on.

If you're playing something like SMN, you have several timers to deal with along with deciding what BP to use when and probably keeping the party alive all at the same time.

If you're playing RDM and you don't have a headache, you're doing it wrong.

If you're playing any kind of other class, you're constantly monitoring hate and TP so the healer doesn't hate you and you can take part in SC's.

If you're playing a traditional tank, you constantly have to be on top of your game and keeping track of timers.  If you're playing /NIN, you have even more to keep track of.

FFXI may not be the quickest game, but if you don't think it's not involved you must have no got very far into the game.

And as for the challenge comment, you might be able to handle it but again, you're probably about as good as any mediocre or passable WHM.  If you want to work twice as hard and be worse than me, it's your game, have fun!  Just don't try to pass yourself off as an incredible WHM and tell people macros aren't important because they really are.
