| theARTIST0017 said: Wow, this thread has steered of the topic so far off. I was reading it and I forgot what the thread was about. Anyways, four things. 1. @ weezy. you're worried because you say Nintendo has released details on 3DS early and now Sony knows what it is and has the upper hand. ie. copy 3D effect etc. Well don't you think Nintendo has already thought about that? If it was that big a deal I'm pretty sure 3DS would still be a secret. 2. I believe that even if Sony "potentially" has the upper hand because Nintendo played their cards first, Sony now has less time to react because think about it. Lets say production of 3DS began a year after the Nintendo DS was released. Ok that would give Nintendo 5 years to develop and perfect 3DS. Nintendo has already stated that the Nintendo 3DS is coming out sometime within the fiscal year. So that means the latest that the 3DS will release is sometime next March or around then and the soonest anytime before that. That would mean Sony has less then a year to blueprint, design, develop, then release PSP2 just to be able to compete competitively which not only means being a handheld that is being pitted against 3DS, but can gain many 3rd party software and sell at large amounts. So 5 years > 1 year. Big advantage for Nintendo. 3. This kind of goes back to a point I made in 2. I just wanted people to realize what happen the last time Sony tried to imitate Nintendo at the last second. They ended up with a failure a.k.a "Sixaxis". Poorly developed tilt sensors. 4. This one is a joke, well halfway. If Sony made a PSP2, with better graphics, faster processors, larger screen, etc. it would be like PSP vs DS and everyone knows how that ended up. Ok ok ok lets say Sony threw in stereoscopic 3D. It wouldn't really matter I don't believe BUT the earlier they do it the better. They would at least stand a bit more of a chance. The joke part is, if Sony wants to defeat 3DS, the PSP2 would have to be dual screen with the bottom one touch screen. It would need three cameras two on the inside one on the out capable of taking 3D pictures and recording 3D video. Top screen slightly longer than bottom. Clamshell design. Then they need to call it Nintendo 3DS and release it before Nintendo release their 3DS, so that consumers will buy Sonys "Nintendo 3DS" first and not Nintendo's 3DS :D ha ha ha. So please someone reply to this, tell me whether my post sounds logical or not. Thanks. |
1. Agreed. One shouldn't assume Nintendo doesn't know what they are doing especially in relation to competitors.
2. From what I recall, in game development terms it was 2 years pre-production with 3 years production/design. So now Sony has four major choices. A. Do nothing, release the original PSP2 concept. B. Adjust the PSP in order emulate 3D technology. C. Adjust the PSP in order to differentiate it from the 3DS. D. Scrap the PSP. Since we don't know what the PSP2 is going to be its hard to predict which option they would take, nor what their priorities are. In any case an adjustment would add between 1-2 years onto the development cycle depending on what they do. Nintendo has already captured the hearts and minds of both the developer community locally and worldwide, they have also captured the hearts and minds of everyone who has seen the handheld. Its definately advantage Nintendo whichever way it goes.
3. Sixaxis? I remember I died in MGS4 during a boss fight because I forgot the PS3 even had motion in its controller...
4. On a technical level, adding 3D is pretty difficult. Depending on the original concept they may even be forced to implement a completely different handheld GPU which as a board level change would add at least 18 months to development given the fact that they would need to rework the entire design from the launch titles to the screen and perhaps input method as im not sure if 3D autostereoscopic displays are compatible with multi-touch screens. So they would be forced to decide whether they would compete with Apple/Android and maybe Windows Mobile 7 (if Microsoft decides not to be a total cosmic screwup 100% of the time) or Nintendo.
But yeah, good logic!
