It doesn't matter what Sony does to combat the 3DS, it will not overtake Nintendo in the handheld space. A good portion of handheld games are to children. Nintendo owns that portion of the market. Mario and company are the perfect fit for handheld games, Sony just doesn't have anything to compete with that.
Sony did a fantastic job of shoe horning a PS2 quality experience into a handheld. The biggest problem with the PSP (Besides needing a second analog stick) was that most of the games I wanted were not made to be played in small doses...Which is what I personally want out of a handheld game. If I'm looking to put in a marathon gaming session, I would much rather do it on my television. If Sony truly wants to succeed in the handheld gaming arena they need to make their next handheld feel like a different experience then their console. Just my two cents.
