The difference here between Nintendo and Sony is that if you remove Sony from gaming history its likely it wouldn't make much of a difference to the overall number of people gaming. However remove the SNES, Gameboy, Wii, DS and there would have been a noticeable drop in the number of people who play games.
Sony was simply in the right place at the right time.
