Actually, Sonic was giving Mario a run for his money. It was the little hedgehog, and to a certain extent the Sega CD, that made Nintendo want to work with Sony on making a new console; I think everyone here knows how that turned out.
Crash was perfect back in the glory days of the Playstation. That gameplay where they dubbed it "Sonic's Ass" where you could move forward and back, instead of just sideways was something that the Playstation needed then. But now, you have Sly, Ratchet, and Jak which all brought something new to the table, and I don't know how Insomniac could make Crash even more exciting, and I don't know what else Insomniac could do with the Bandicoot.
But still, the Bandicoot was awesome. I will go as far as to claim that the best Playstation commercials involved the Bandicoot:
Crash Team Racing: "You and me. Boo-yah grandma, boo-yah!"
Crash invading Nintendo headquarters: "Hey plumber boy, moustache man, your worst nightmare has arrived."
