"These guys lost a shit load of credibility to me when they over-bashed Assassin's Creed 2 and Final Fantasy XIII"
I think Jim Sterling's approach to video game reviews is to hold games to the standards they set for themselves. Assassin's Creed II and Final Fantasy XIII are triple-A titles with enormous budgets that fell short of the mark, so they get bad marks. Not decent marks or OK marks like you find at most other websites (with the exception of Edge), but legitimately bad marks.
All in all I think it's a reasonable approach. As a gamer I personally didn't hold FFXIII to the standards of all video games ever made, but rather to the standards set by past Final Fantasies (and more broadly by good RPGs in general).
