The really incredible part is that, generally speaking, things have been steadily getting better for the past 500 years or so.

Just think of all the discrimination that went on 50 years ago. Or the fact that there was no welfare state 100 years ago. 500 years ago, literacy rates Europe were less than 1%, the Sun was thought to revolve around the Earth, and bleeding people was considered to be a great way to treat disease.

It's easy to look at how far we have to go and lose heart, but try to keep in perspective how far we've come in only a couple dozen generations. The problems of the day always seem so overwhelming, but we do seem to have a knack for slowly and clumsily solving them, even if the process isn't as painless as it could be.
