Honestly we will never know one way or another. Since the industry itself seems to take off during Sony's reign at the top, and Nintendo stumbling at the same time its always viewed as Sony being the main reson behind that rise.
But we dont know if that rise would have happened regardless....IE: Internet, publication, still a growing acceptence...we dont know if it was because of Sony or going to happen regardless.
I dont know that answer, but each side argueing matter of factly is dumb. We dont know, however i feel for myself and people i know we got into gaming before Sony entered....but we fell in love with gaming after....who is to say why? It was generally 3rd party developers, not the console that made us all love gaming so just because Sony was a vessel for them im not sure id say theyre the cause of it.
However, its safe to say th eWii has now expanded the market like no other time in history, imo.
