Simply being honest here, and looking at the 3DS lineup thus far, Sony doesn't seem to have much of a chance in the handheld market to beat the 3DS. I mean look at the titles: Resident Evil, Assassin's Creed, Kingdom Hearts, Splinter Cell, Ghost Recon, Super Street Fighter, Final Fantasy, Saint's Row, Final Fantasy, Samurai Warriors, Professor Layton, Ridge Racer, Dead or Alive, on top of the Nintendo titles like Kid Icarus, Star Fox, Animal Crossing, Mario Kart, Zelda, Pilot Wings, Paper Mario, Nintendogs.. I mean DAMN.. If I were Sony, I'd be pretty afraid at this point.

Nintendo has seemingly shanghaied Sony into pouring all their effort and their resources into their Wii imitator, the PS Move, while Nintendo has moved on and is currently gathering 3rd parties to build on their new handheld, while disrupting Sony in the 3D space as well, which is Sony's other major "ace in the hole" aside from Move. Once the snowball effect of all these titles begins, it will be difficult if not impossible for Sony to slow it.

With their resources poured into Move and 3D console gaming, I can't see Sony being able to release an entirely new handheld anytime soon, giving the 3DS a huge lead ahead. I see them in a constant "PC like" upgrade to their PSP, hoping that they can continually oust Nintendo with more powerful hardware. But Sony is going to need that hook to really have any chance in the future in the handheld market. Gamers are simply not going to be sold by just better graphics anymore, especially in the handheld market.

This was an excellent input.
