This gen has been pretty good for both on an individual basis; I enjoyed Valkyria Chronicles (though it's more of an SRPG rather than JRPG), and Lost Odyssey is an excellent Final Fantasy.
That said, I've been playing the Mass Effect games for the past couple of weeks. Those two alone kick the JRPGs I've played this gen right in the shins, and that includes the handheld games.
