Again if Sony can start to sell at an affordable price from the start, and gain more and more 3rd party support (their 1st parties are solid) then they will do great...

I personally think that Ninty will need something unique 'again' to get the leader position next gen ...they are more than capable of this however...but I also think Sony and MS are too..so it's anyones game really :D we all gain tho, better the rivalry the better the games

Sony's first party is good, but Nintendo's is in a whole different league. I'm not saying a new Sony handheld / console wouldn't do well, but I definitely don't see why people assume they have any chance at outdoing Nintendo just by "not screwing up."

Why would Nintendo need something unique to remain leader? I don't understand that mentality. Nintendo has the strongest first party by far, and if they come into a gen with AAA third party support (which they virtually had none of in the west this gen), it'd be no contest. It's the third party games that keep the Sony / MS consoles afloat, and if that differential is removed, well...

It's Sony / MS that need to do something unique to overcome the current leader. I wouldn't say that's impossible, but the odds are really against them.

"but Nintendo's is in a whole different league"

That's more like an opinion tho...I personally think Sony first party is on a whole different league than both other parties BUT that's a debate for a different thread...so let's not go there

And going by your argument they should have been the market leader in every generation they were in the market yes? Not like their first party suddenly came up with killer new IP for the console

The NUMBER ONE selling point when Wii came out was the motion controls, simple as that, if not for that they wouldn't have had such a huge gap between them and the HD twins...btw this doesn't mean they couldn't have been number one, it means there wouldn't be such a huge gap

We will see if this is true or not if they come out next gen with something unique that outshines the competition....but like I said, for us gamers, more rivalry the better so it's all good

Like johnsobas said, opinion is irrelevant to this discussion. It doesn't matter what you or I think of Nintendo's / Sony's games, it's what the market thinks, and they overwhelmingly favor Nintendo. They completely dominate the best selling games of all time charts, that's inarguable. I know we're all videogame critics on these forums, but that has little to do with sales.

No, my argument wouldn't conclude Nintendo leading the market every gen - the N64 got virtually no third party support, nor did the GC get much, and they arrived 1-2 years late to the scene. In the case of the N64, their third party relations made it essentially Nintendo vs the rest of the world (which they have learned from, see the Wii), and with the GC they didn't offer much compelling software. The 3DS has developers on board, and since Nintendo seems to be gunning for (AAA) 3rd party support this round, it's likely their home console successor will get lots as well.

Also, they did come up with killer IP's this gen. It wasn't just motion controls, their whole strategy changed. Notice how we're getting a flood of 2D platformers now, when we never did on the N64 / GC? What about Wii Fit? Obviously the touch screen / motion control gives them more room to create experiences most gamers can appreciate, but tacking motion control onto GC games (or PS2, PS3, Xbox games for that matter) would not have worked at all.

All I wanted to say is this: if all things remain the same, Nintendo will come out on top, not Sony (which many seem to insinuate). The ball is in Sony's court - they're the ones pressured to change the status quo. They probably won't have the luxury of having billions of dollars to burn, or third parties overwhelmingly favoring them (compared to Nintendo) next gen, so it's not going to be easy.
