This comes up every time, and the reason it's not given much thought is because two things need to happen:
- Nintendo needs to fuck up.
- Sony / MS needs to pull off something they've never done before.
I don't see either happening for the next round of handhelds / consoles. There is the gen after, in which Nintendo may need to really change things up to remain leader, but that's a long ways off.
Besides, there's a major difference in how the two became successful. Nintendo pretty much builds its own success single-handedly (first/second parties), while Sony had avalanches of third-party support since their first console.
