about the hard drives, yes you can put in pretty much any 2.5" hard drive in your PS3 (as long as it's RPM's aren't too high I believe).
However, if you have an external hard drive and a partitioning program, you can partition a portion of the hard drive to Fat32 and use that to store extra music, videos, or pictures for your PS3 as well.
