I think a large part of the justification for the DS Fire Emblem remakes is probably that the west never saw these games originally. They're attractive for JP fans AND they're bringing everyone else up to speed on the series, so not a bad thing there.
I mean, I doubt Tales fans would mind if they started remaking and releasing all the mothership Tales games we missed here on 3DS or something (Destiny II, Rebirth, Innocence, Hearts, Graces, etc).
