In Dual Play, you control each fighter with one stick, and the they fire automatically, so that you needn't worry about handling that.
The triggers control the spread/compression of the fire. One widens it. One compresses it.
Dual Play is optional... you can play Solo Play, with just one fighter, where you control if you're firing or not. Other control modes include MultiDirectional, where you control the aim of the fire, and G-Mode, where you control two linked fighters paying homage to Galaga... which continues the Duality theme. Each of these modes has the dual-weapon system where you can have spread fire or laser fire.
