They brought no fewer than three remakes to E3. They very much are living in the past. Not one new franchise, experimental title, or expansive thought besides "making Kid Icarus 3-D" and "making Kirby interesting again."
They're clearly overly dependant on pre-existing popular franchises, and obviously lack the confidence or ability to create new ones. Need more proof? They essentially buried anything that was "new" to them the past two generations. Eternal Darkness, Disaster, Fatal Frame, Project HAMMER--all under used, under appreciated, or flat out ignored.
Nintendo can't go six months without putting out another title with Mario in it.
