Yeah, bringing it to the store sounds like the right course of action to me. Have them find the customer, be it through forced phone unlocking or simcard probing, or whatnot, and then they can find out. There's a very small, but non-zero chance, that you may be allowed to claim the phone after a certain time after the owner is contacted; don't be afraid to ask what their policy is on this. They'll be happy that you did the right thing of turning it in first.
