Sony stands to make far more money on making 3D an everyday TERM. They dont need adoption, they simply need people to accept the concept. This doesnt mean adoption, but if people begin accepting that transition, sony has positioned itself as a company at the forefront via their TV's, PS3 and Worldcup not to mention the new advertising with Peyton and Timberlake.
This goes beyond videogames and goes beyond even the next year. Im surprised how jaded and shortsighted some people are. Nintendo, especially at this current time, are so influential to a lot of demographics especially on a technology front as a lot mor epeople will pay attention to where they choose to innovate based on the success of Wii and to a lesser extent the DS. Because of their visionary past, the fact theyr eembracing 3d tech, regardless of glasses or not, will immediately give 3D credibility.

Well, the inherent problem there is that Nintendo's already taken a very antagonistic stance in what sort of 3D they feel is "credible", specifically taking a strong position that 3D glasses are antiquated, expensive and ultimately unnecessary. Going by the conference, it's rather clear this is going to be a keystone in their 3DS marketing and promotion. Like you said, Nintendo is hugely influential, and if the general public adopts a similar position, it's going to spoil Sony's roadmap.
Sony isn't selling 3D as a concept, just as they didn't sell gaming (PlayStation) as a concept. They're selling their 3D, which involves new televisions and glasses. There's clear distinctions here, and clear competition on the horizon...

I disagree. The huge battle isnt convincing people to enjoy 3D via glasses or sans glasses. Its convincing people 3D is legitimate enough to invest in safely.
The battle here isnt about distinction in 3d tech, by implying or inferring the 3ds technology on a 3.5 inch screen is going to spoil sonys roadmap due to lack of accessories, you are also implying 3D cinema will be stunted due to this as well?
Im not so sure consumers are as stupid as you seem to be implying by saying once they experience a 3.5 inch screen in 3d, theyll all of a sudden expect or demand the same on a 55 inch TV.
3D TV's are expensive, but they are relatively priced well compared to regular flatpanel televisions, i recently had this debate and the 55 inch samsun can be purchased for a rather inexpensive price via amazon.com......LCD/Plasma adoption is at the point where theres still a lot of room for growth in penetration and thses companies make a good point to have new adopters opt for 3D, and old adopters may be in th emarket for an upgrade.
The problem with 3D has never really been price or the glasses like some people want to complain about, its been about making it an accepted standard, the 3DS takes a large step towards that.
