9/11 was one of the worst things to happen to the U.S. in history. Not because of the death/destruction, but the fact that it twisted many Americans into some of the most over-dramatic, frightened, and vicious people on the planet. This thread shows that perfectly. He's comparing it based on the impact the oil spill could potentially have on the government's energy policy, similar to the change in defense policy after 9/11. Yes, 9/11 was a very tragic event. However, this is still a perfectly fine comparison and I don't exactly see people getting teary eyed over the Korean War or anything.
