Modern Warfare games just wasn't the WORD OF MOUTH effect,it was so much more than that.it was cause of all the hype surrounding it and cause everybody was buying it.most people didn't even play the game much as they just bought to be the part of the HERD.

Lastly, for the Wii sellouts... don't even bother, this isn't arguable. The Wii was sold out pretty much everywhere during its first year.

Record breaking launch sales: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wii_launch#Sales

Wii sellouts did happen but they were restocked are a while and during the holiday.every launch gets sold out but they always restock.

PS2 sellouts happened and they just couldn't restock  its launch holiday

also one of the more reasons Wii sold out was that Nintendo's expectation were low as they had not been good in the console market for a while.not saying they just understocked them but overall their expectations would have been lower.

for example if Gamecube was to be the number one console in the PS2 era

Nintendo would have stocked 2-3 times of Wii consoles at launch and still soldout.

Most people didn't even play the game? You can't be serious...

After the first week, there 8 million players tried online (VGC has PS360 sales at ~8.2mil, PC sales unknown). As of March 2010, 25 million unique players played the game (most from X360, which require paid accounts).

Where do you think all this hype comes from? The game media, the reviewers? None of this is actually important. They tried to hype the hell out of GTA IV, and it didn't work. As soon as the game got into people's hands, its legs were cut off. I'll say it again, customers are not as mindless as you think they are.

Arguing the Wii sellout point is silly. Yes, the Wii was sold out and restocked, but guess what? As soon as the console restocked, they're all bought out immediately. You didn't read the links (that gave the situation in each respective month).

As for Nintendo's low expectations? That's what my last link was for, I'll quote it for you:

On December 12, 2006, sales data analysis firm Chart-Track and Nintendo confirmed with several press outlets in the United Kingdom that the Wii had become the fastest selling video game console in the region's recorded history, selling 105,000 consoles in its opening weekend

Nintendo announced on the following day that the Wii had sold 325,000 units across Europe in its first two days of sale, making it the fastest selling console across the entire European continent.

They were producing as many Wii's as they could, but couldn't keep up with demand. Seeing how the console is still the fastest selling in history (from launch), that isn't surprising.
