The best LCDs are more efficient even though plasmas have improved. I don't think that will ever change.
I wouldn't rely too much on Energy Star either, the program is under federal review because of widespread fraud and abuse of the certification process. The GAO submitted fake products which such as a gas powered alarm clock and a air cleaner that was actually a space heater and they got Energy Star approved.
Anyone can guess. It takes no effort to throw out lots of predictions and have some of them be correct. You are not and wiser or better for having your guesses be right. Even a blind man can hit the bullseye.
