My Uncle works at Microsoft Seattle. He explained why Microsoft entered the console industry to begin with. They entered the console buisness to prevent Sony from entering the PC buisness. They thought that PlayStation was headed towards being a computer as Sony themselves have said it is.

So Microsoft sees Sony as a major threat to Windows and Microsoft's monopoly. As such Microsoft entered to try killing Sony by destroying its PlayStation. Microsoft hoped to weaken Sony and deter them from entering the PC industry. Think of it as a pre-emptive strike.

Microsoft would rather enter the console race and fight Sony their rather then wait for Sony to enter the PC market and fight to defend their home turf. The best defence is a good offence. Also keep in mind that Microsoft supported the DreamCast which was their first step.

Microsoft has a three tier plan to take on Sony and disable them. The first step was to enter the market and make a name for the X-Box brand. The second step was to expand that market across the globe (Japan,Europe...etc...etc..) The third step I don't know yet as I have yet to be told my uncle doesn't discuss anything really confidential to me (Damnit).

Fact is Microsoft entered the industry to prevent Sony from entering the PC industry. Microsoft's bone is not with Nintendo its with Sony as they see Sony as a direct threat. Microsoft will do anything and everything in their power to weaken Sony's grip on the console market (Handheld or home) if that means teaming up with Nintendo and throwing support their way then thats a price Microsoft is more then happy to pay!

This just in: SONY HAS BEEN MAKING PCS FOR YEARS!

The only threat Sony would pose to MS is if Sony wanted to make the Playstation OS a real OS, but that is not what you said, at all.

Thats exactly what Microsoft was fearing a PlayStation OS. Sony has made PC's for years your right but they do not make the whole PC. Their design utalizing Microsoft's OS and parts from other third parties. Microsoft feared a PlayStation computer.

The PlayStation3 was announced as a computer with its own OS. Now Sony has not taken that OS to third parties or tried to make it a competitor to Windows at the moment. However if Sony decided to migrate the PlayStation brand to computers and go mainstream with the next PSOS it would pose a major threat to Windows and thats why Microsoft is not about to let that happen without a fight!
