Reason Ms is silent is because they have no money to make off 3D.
The best dividens they could hope for by introducing 3D is to boost sales of the console slightly. However to do that, they have to make it a lot more user friendly than PS3.
There are 6 million existing 3D TV owners who can't use the PS3, not because their TV is not capable of showing 3D which PS3 is outputting...but because PS3 will not even turn 3D on unless your TV has HDMI 1.4.
There are also many millions of 120 hz monitor owners, CRT owners and projector users who can do 3D gaming but are left out in the cold for with the PS3 since it requires HDMI 1.4.
If 360 is able to introduce 3D which works for these users, it will easily make a bigger impact than PS3, which requires you to buy a brand new TV.

PS3 is HDMI 1.3
and HDMI 1.4 is backward compatible
PS3 will work with HDMI 1.3 3D TV's just that almost all new 3DTV's are HDMI 1.4

No it wont. Sony is blocking 1.3 devices. People have confirmed it that it needs HDMI 1.4 Go look around on forums...

searched a bit
it isn't that clear but some people are saying it is
anyways i found out why it is that
as HDMI 1.4 doesn't really have much upgrades.the biggest is Ethernet data channel and 2K HD bandwidth
this is not required for PS3 3D 1080p but they require the software part of HDMI 1.4 specs where it defines how 3D DATA should be carried out
So they essentially made the 3D part or HDMI 1.3 PS3 to HDMI 1.4 just without the ethernet channel and 2K HD support which is not needed
so now they can essentially send uncompressed 3D signals through PS3
but there is also a way they can output it on HDMI 1.3 if they don't ban it than they can make PS3 uncode the 3D DATA for transfer through HDMI 1.3
This from a SONY executive and HDMI 1.4 consortium.
Don't really know if HDMI 1.3 has been locked out as it can be used
anyways how is MS doing it as SONY can still send 720p 3D than 360 without converting the software part of HDMI 1.3 to HDMI 1.4
