It is called the "Internet Tough Guy" Syndrome. If you cannot see me, you cannot harm me, so I will say whatever I want. It is unfortunately the same as someone standing behind a wall talking to someone else. They are much more likely to be an absolute jackass than if they were standing face to face.
I put gaming up there with Politics and Religion. They are just subjects that "most" people cannot debate. They are so entrenched in their respective side that they cannot or will not see any other.
