As for S.Korea I think it's more down to terrible referring descisions rather than a Fifa conspiracy. Yes the Italy game was dubious but at the same time, Italy had a copious amount of chances to kill the match off but didn't take any of them and as a result paid for it, you only win games if you take your chances. |
I agree with your last statement, because the same thing has happened for Portugal, especially in the qualifying match against Denmark in Copenhagen. Most Portuguese fans were complaining that we had a bad offside ruling which denied us the chance to win the game (we drew 0-0), although they often forget that Portugal had 36 shots on goal, thus it was only a matter of not taking advantage of your chances.
I'm not saying there's any kind of conspiracy, it's just that FIFA has always had a thing for favoring home side teams in the WC. UEFA does it too. Even Portugal was a bit favored in 2004 as well. It would be bad for business if the home team got eliminated early on the competition.
Although that 2002 WC was very atypical. Portugal, Argentina and France got eliminated early on, Senegal went to the quarer-finals and USA had their best WC participation as well
