Sony's Google Gambit It is latching onto the search giant's open-source Android and other offerings as it plays catch-up with competitors

Tokyo - It's starting to look like more than a schoolyard crush. As Sony (SNE) scrambles to recover from billions of dollars in losses, a flirtation with Google (GOOG) is becoming serious. It's the first PC maker to sell machines pre-loaded with the search giant's Chrome Web browser; the Sony Reader will be able to download e-books in a format backed by Google; and Sony Ericsson cell phones will use Google's Android operating system.

"The company says it also may let Google and others create applications for its PlayStation 3 game console. "Open technologies are very important to consumers," Schaaff said in an interview last year. "Obviously we don't have a monopoly on innovation."

lol I just love how the way the article is written...love affair :P and that last line is well said

Guess we can expect to see some exciting stuff at E3 this time around :D What do you think Joeorc? New psp or applications for Ps3 or both?

notice this line:

"Chief Executive Howard Stringer four years ago put Apple (AAPL) veteran Tim Schaaff in charge of software. Last February, Stringer reshuffled top management, turning to younger executives who are, he said at the time, "network-centric and very open-minded." Cozying up to Google helps Stringer speed development of products that can tap into the Web.

well there may indeed be a new PSP info released but i think it may infact be Android Based with the XMB stack inside the Android OS.

both may infact be a big the big suprise for E3.

Google TV for the PS3 as a added application like the :

MLB.Tv was for the PS3

and maybe even a PSP2 hybrid Android Device with WiMax enabled connectivity maybe even 4G enabled also.

and this once again:

"The company says it also may let Google and others create applications for its PlayStation 3 game console. "Open technologies are very important to consumers," Schaaff said in an interview last year. "Obviously we don't have a monopoly on innovation."

this may infact lend some credence to the "Other OS" was not only removed for security but this way there is one unified Linux platform on the Playstation 3. since the App's are java based for Android

the application's under review should be easy for Sony to approve or not:

like the MLB. TV application for example.
