And pop isn't exactly pop style over substance, at least not entirely. You have people like Whitney Houston and Celine Dion who have never exactly been known for style but are among the best-selling artists ever. Madonna (who is my favorite singer ever btw) is a perfect mix between the two, she's had her share of mindless dancing music but then again she had her album "Ray of Light" which remains until this day among the most spiritual, emotionally-satisfying album I've ever heard. And Madonna has LOTS of style. So you know, if Lady GaGa keeps the focus on her style instead of her music and keeps repeating the same chorus structure (like she did in the first two albums) or "pays tribute" too much to other songs, she will end up losing more fans and joining the ranks of Cyndi Lauper who was once insanely popular and a pop icon but now is barely recognized. |
I put '??' behind tribute, to mean it was guestionable. I agree with you.
In hindsight i should have added Pop in these days. Whitney and Celine are real singing diva's. Although Whitney seems to be falling - her new tour is not a real comeback. Celine is still big - and even pregnant.
Imo, Madonna was more Style over substance. She made her name by shocking people - everthing from religion too Politics. Gaga takes to her, but then in a pure stylish way, with design.
