Probably he would have, but then again, that would change the entire plot of the game, as there wouldn't be any reason for this particular plot to happen. Barthandelus could easily do that 500 years ago, 100 years ago, whenever. So the plot would never be the same. 

But no, the main spark for the plot was the resurrection of the two pulse L'Cie which had tried to destroy Cocoon before, which lead to the series of events of the thirteen days, which in turn led to the events of the plot of the game. 

So that is essential to the plot, to why everything unfolds as it does, to why even Jihl and Yaag had any relevance to the plot. 

So you're saying that the only relevance that plot had was to crystallize Fang and Vanille?
