| Garcian Smith said: This seriously shows how much of a sham "gaming journalism" is. The gaming press is heavily skewed toward shooters. Note that this list doesn't even acknowledge games like Rock Band, Persona 3, and God Of War 2 that deserve a place in any "Best of 2007" list - especially over Polished Shooters #2739-2741. |
Couldn't agree more. God of War 2 being overlooked is kind of expected because it came out so early this year (not that that justifies it being overlooked. But Persona 3 definitely needs more attention and was arguably the most interesting RPG of the year. Similarly, UT3 and Crysis have no place on a top ten. One is nothing more than a prettier version of 2k4 with a few weapon tweaks. The other is pretty as hell, but a very straightforward and conventional FPS. I could see Stalker being on a top-ten, especially for PC, but only towards the bottom.
Only people who like to gush about x-platform being better than platform y. Personally I think any top-ten list is inherently flawed when comparing something across multiple genres and, in this case, video game systems.
This is just so wrong.
What fighting game is better than God of War 2 that hit PC this year? Or if that counts as a legendary franchise how about an RPG as inventive as Persona 3? Hell, what about a side-scrolling game better than Odin Sphere? This year has had plenty of games like that, and the past is littered with even more. The fact that you say only "legendary franchises" can beat a PC game makes it clear that thats the only sorts of console games you've played. Try expanding your horizons before you make such sweeping generalizations.
In a similar vein, I dont see how you can take bit-tech reviews seriously. They've always come across as throw away article, to me at least, and I think the review of Crysis makes that clear. They seem to grade hard on technical accomplishment, and little on originality.
