I agree that allowing Moore to leave was a huge mistake.
Moore's strong suit was that he positioned himself as a gamer's gamer. He did interviews, he read and responded to blogs, followed message boards ... generally it was just him being a very savvy salesman with a genuine interest in understanding his target audience.
Fanboys worship figureheads like that.
He was a "face" in Microsoft's gaming arm. Without someone with the PR cache he brought, Microsoft goes right back to being the faceless "Evil Empire."
