And GT5 isn't 1080P btw, before anybody brings that up. It's 1280X1080. It's nicely better than 720P, but it ISNT 1080P.

1080 stands for vertical resolution while the P stand for progressive. Often people  assumes 1080p is widescreen. 1280X1080 is 1080p in 5:4 format, SD runs in 4:3 format, Widescreen is 16:9 format.

It even more confusing when it comes to 720p as most so called 720p HDTV has  1366X768 resolution.

It's more correct to say GT5 is not in widescreen yet in 1080p.

There is also a problem with designing games to run in 1080p and widescreen when it comes playing the games on SDTV. There are still a lot of people gaming on SDTV, probably more than those who are with 1080p HDTV. 720p is ithe ideal middle between the two.

A lot of people don't buy this. Not because they're right, but because they mistake 1080p for the marketing term "Full HD."

But yes, technically any native signal with 1080 lines of vertical resolution generated at 60 fields per second (progressive scan) is 1080p, regardless of horizontal resolution.
