Born in '81 as well and I'm pretty happy with it. I actually think I had a very nice childhood (despite us not having much money for leasure in the 80s). No air conditioning and DVDs in cars but entertainment technology was often so new and exciting; like genuinely new, not just having it smaller and in a dozen colours.
Then there were also arcades.

Then I was a teen in the 90s, I doubt I'll ever enjoy England as much as I did then, plus I still like 90s music. Somehow it felt like a very optimistic time. Things felt a lot less commercial too, the internet was a pretty lovely mess.
Kids... I think we just stayed kids for longer, and that was good. The norm also wasn't to behave like a dumb small-time criminal or dress like a whore - I'm seeing too much of this today.

Of course most people tend to look back with some fondness, and you don't notice many of the big problems as a kid unless they affect you very directly. And I grew up pretty sheltered, so I'd probably look at the past in a similar way even if I were born later.
