Some of them, yes, for sure. But a lot also had religion for excuse, masking the commercial or political interests behind them. Like, most of the Crusades were pretty mundane. An excuse for feudal lords on ocidental Europe and rising kings to take their chances on getting oriental spices, fabrics etc.
