SSBB is not a real fighter.  It plays like a competitive beat-em-up for parties.

It's not traditional by any stretch, but Smash has a dedicated tourney scene.  That alone makes it a "real" fighter, and not simply party fluff.

It's not the only one either, PowerStone and Virtual On also had dedicated scenes, and are pretty far themselves from the SF/VF archetypes and (PS at least) is also often denigrated as simply a "party game".
