There is Euro 2008 next year, not quite the World Cup, but still huge. Since England didn't make it, a lot of their fans will want to play a VG rather then watch it. ;)

Thats an annual tournament? Or every 2 years or something?

We still have all the regular, annual sporting events and associated gaming licenses:

  • Madden (NFL)
  • Fifa / PES (Football)
  • Tennis Grandslams (none)
  • NBA, NBL, Hockey, ...

Could be interesting to debate what (annual) sequels we'll see next year...

  • Call of Duty
  • Guitar Hero
  • Mario Party
  • Assassins Creed?
  • Need for Speed
  • (etc...)

I suspect we'll start seeing a lot more 360/PS3 x-platform titles, and less exclusives as well. Exclusives mainly from Sony or MS owned/affiliated (i.e. funded) companies.
