To consider Super Smash Brothers a legit fighting game (Street Fighter, Tekken, BB, Virtua Figther) is like considering Street Soccer as real soccer.

These legit fighting games I named have tournaments worldwide and the contestants are held in high regard. Likewise legit soccer players like Ronaldo, Lampard, Messi are held in high regard by fans of soccer.

Seriously Nintendo fanboys (I know I'll be banned for a week) can go and dream that one day SSB will be considered as a real fighting game.

Brawl uses ring-out rules instead of hit point rules.  This was inspired by sumo, which is a legit form of fighting.  And... it's optional.  You can switch it to use hit points just like every other fighter out there.  You can have 1 on 1 fights with no items, no platforms, and no bottomless pits, use hit points, and even put walls on the sides.  So what's the problem?

And there are definitely Brawl tournaments.
