Well they invested lots of money in Xbox 1, Windows Vista and Zune, and none of those was worth any money at all ultimately.

Xbox1 begat Xbox360, Vista begat Windows 7, and Zune begat Zune HD and is an uncle to Windows 7 phone. All were worth the money MS invested.
