Can someone fill me in what the Wild Arms series is all about? I presume it's an RPG?

is a JRPG, very simillar to the old final fantasy games, but of course has its own style and all.

PS1 era or PS2 era? Just never heard of it before.

By the way there is an Anime on it if you ever want to check it out...will give you an idea about what it's about
