If they change their approach at some point in the future to get all that revenue from charging for online gaming like MS is doing, more power to them. It's a market, profit-driven choice.
However, as long as online gameplay remains free as it has since the PS3 launch, I consider it a huge benefit that PS3 owners have been enjoying.
And when the neXtBox launches, MS will have a problem if PS3 still offers free online: gamers will have to buy a new console and continue to pay for the privilege to play online, when they can alternatively get a cheaper PS3 and play online for free. That's a harder sale to make than the one MS has been offering to date, which has put a cheaper 360 up against the more expensive PS3. It may be rough trying to sell online gameplay if the hardware MS wants consumers to buy isn't sold at a discount to the PS3, like it has been.
