Tragic and pointless, though. Aside from an equipment malfunction (bald tires or something) there was absolutely no reason for that to have happened.

Much like falling off a motorcycle, being thrown from a vehicle doesn’t cause that significant of injuries as long as things go well. If you land so that you don’t break anything, you don’t collide with anything while you’re moving, and you don’t try to stand up while moving (which causes flipping and repeated blows to the head), the most serious injuries are going to be road-rash; and that is like someone taking a belt sander to your skin, and the speed you’re going would relate to how long they used that sander on you.

Or to put it another way, I would expect that in roll-over accidents like this (probably) half the people who were in the bed of the truck would probably walk away; with the other half being seriously injured or killed.
