Ryu travels and trains alone because he fears to hurt the people he loves I guess. His strength reaches its maximum when he's "Evil Ryu" but he's in a constant battle to overcome that dark side of himself.
In SSF4, however, that has no mention in the story. He keeps yapping about how every battle makes him stronger or how he's not strong enough yadda yadda ..
