No, it's nothing like GTA; it's more like Shenmue. Watch GameSpot's video review of Yakuza 3. I showed this to a friend, and he bought and loved it afterwards.

Yakuza 3 has a fantastic story, and the final chapters are incredibly well-done. It has a slow start since the first couple of chapters are basically used for introducing/developing the characters and setting up the plot, but it pays off in the end.

Resonance of Fate is for the hardcore JRPG gamer; it's arduous, lengthy and requires a lot of grinding & strategy.
