Well if the Edomites just destroyed your city, and you want to take revenge then smashing babies against rocks would be a totally justified action. I guess that's not really torture though, unless it survives the first smash and is still alive to exprience further smashing...

I don't think that's justifiable, but there are certainly plenty of people that do. And strangely enough they are the ones saying that we "just know" what is right and wrong. But they have a different cultural zeitgeist than I do.
