Ok, here is some data from their earnings reports (millions of USD):
FY 2003 650
FY 2004 404
FY 2005 75
Profit of over 1.1B (I did not find reports for previous years)
FY 2006 -1969
Q1 2007 -237
Q2 2007 -841
Loss of 3B
So they accumulated 3B in losses with the PS3 but they sold their share on the Cell manufacturing plant to Toshiba for 800M this quarter (Q3). Anyway they still need to make 2.2B to break even.
I will consider Sony very successful if they make a profit in the Game division for FY 2008. If they can do this, then they will easily recover their losses in the next 2 years.
They need to stop losing money, the money they already lost (2.2-3B) is not too bad for a console that is supposed to last for 10 years.
